Poem

      WAIHI BEACH

      afternoon falls out of nowhere
      drifts somewhere
      they follow it through

      low tide
      carnivorous with seagulls
      fetches & retrieves

      from a crook of pohutukawa
they watch a flock of waves
      fly the horizon

      when islands shift
      & day shakes the sand
      from her skirt

      they leave with her
      lost in kisses
      sky against the ridge

      eggshell blue
